Site of Chernobyl nuclear reactor and nearby Belarus, Ukrainian, and Russian Federation regions exposed to radioactive fallout after the 1986 nuclear accident. Levels of contamination varied from high (dark colored areas) to low (light colored areas). Sera of adolescents living in three contaminated and three noncontaminated villages in these regions demonstrated persistence of thyroid auto-antibodies in the exposed Belarussian population 13 to 15 years after the accident, without evidence of overt thyroid dysfunction. From the article by Agate et al., in this issue, pages 2729–2736.
