Insufficient evidence was found for the effectiveness of any complementary or alternative treatment for menopausal symptoms in a meta-analysis of 70 trials.
(Arch Intern Med (July 24, 2006) 166(14):1453)
Among individuals with impaired glucose tolerance, common transcription factor 7-like 2 gene variants are associated with increased risk of diabetes due to effects on insulin secretory capacity rather than insulin resistance.
(N Engl J Med (July 20, 2006) 355:241)[Abstract/Free Full Text]
A possible beneficial effect of statin therapy on albuminuria was shown in a meta-analysis of 15 randomized controlled trials.
(Ann Intern Med (July 18, 2006) 145(2):117)
No differences in perinatal mortality or babies with congenital anomalies were identified between mothers with type 1 and type 2 diabetes in a population-based study.
(BMJ (July 22, 2006) 333:177)[Abstract/Free Full Text]
Subclinical hypothyroidism was found to be associated with increased risk of coronary heart disease (OR 1.7, 95% CI 1.32.1) in a systematic review.
(Am J Med (July 2006) 119(7):541)
Among 2084 white men, higher estradiol levels were associated with lower risk of subsequent cardiovascular disease in the older men (hazard ratio, 0.86 (CI, 0.78 to 0.96)), whereas no association of serum testosterone or DHEA-S level with incident CVD was seen.
(Ann Intern Med (August 1, 2006) 145(3):176)
Activator-recruited co-factor/Mediator (ARC105) was shown to be a key effector of SREBP-dependent genes regulation of lipid homeostasis in metazoans, such as the desaturation of stearic to oleic acid.
(Nature (August 10, 2006) 442(7103):700)
Neuronal tyrosine phosphatase PTP1B knockout mice had lower weight, less adiposity, and increased activity and energy expenditure with hypersensitivity to leptin, suggesting that PTP1B regulates body mass and adiposity primarily through its brain actions.
(Nat Med (August 2006) 12(8):917)
When potential associations of vitamin D receptor gene polymorphisms with bone mineral density and fractures were assessed in 26,242 subjects from a 9-center consortium, only the Cdx2 polymorphism was associated with lesser vertebral fracture risk (9%; 95% CI, 0% to 18%; P = 0.04), whereas there were no associations between either BMD or fractures and the FokI, BsmI, ApaI, and TaqI polymorphisms.
(Ann Intern Med (August 15, 2006) 145(4):255)

New Transportation Security Administration guidelines permit air travelers to carry insulin and related supplies in their carry on baggage, as long as the name on the medication matches the passengers ticket. For more information about traveling with diabetes supplies, see: https://diabetes.org/advocacy-and-legalresources/discrimination/public_accommodation/travel.jsp

Endocrine Education & Training

Under a new NIH policy, National Research Service Awards will reimburse only 60% of tuition and fees up to $16,000 per year for predoctoral students, $4,500 per year for postdoctoral trainees, and $21,000 per year for dual-degree trainees. However, programs may cover additional tuition expenses by cutting one or more training grant positions. (For more information, see: http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-06-090.html)
The Residency Review Committee for Internal Medicine posted a set of frequently asked questions related to program requirements on its web site. (To see the document, go to: http://www.acgme.org/acWebsite/RRC_140/140_SubFAQ2006.pdf)
Postdoctoral students at the University of California are debating whether to unionize with the United Auto Workers. For more information, see Nature (August 10, 2006) 442(7103):609.

Some new observations on subacute thyroiditis. Skillern PG, Nelson HE, Crile G. J Clin Endocrinol Metab 1956;16:14221432.
