Normal or high dietary iodine intake was associated with a higher frequency of autoimmune thyroid disease and hypothyroidism in a five-year prospective study of the effect of varied iodine intake on subsequent thyroid disease in China. (N Engl J Med (June 29, 2006) 354(26):2783)

Treatment with plasmid DNA encoding the VEGF-A-activating zinc finger protein transcription factor (ZFP-TF) maintained sensory and motor nerve conduction velocities in rats with streptozotocin-induced diabetes. (Diabetes (June 2006) 55(6):1847)

Type 1 diabetic patients given an isocaloric low-fat diet for three months showed significantly improved insulin sensitivity compared with the standard diabetes diet, although their insulin sensitivity was still 33% lower than control subjects, and their glycemic control, body weight, and body composition were all unimproved. (Diabet Med (April 200) 23(4):384)

Among 772 adults at high cardiovascular risk, those fed for three months with one of two Mediterranean diets rich in either free virgin olive oil or free nuts showed greater improvements than those on a conventional low-fat diet in plasma glucose, systolic blood pressure, total-to-HDL cholesterol ratio, and C-reactive protein. (Ann Intern Med (July 4, 2006) 145(1):1)

Among 982 California women aged 35 to 65 years, hot flashes occurred at least 3 days per week in 13% of those who were premenopausal, 79% of those perimenopausal, and 39% of those postmenopausal. Chronic insomnia was present in 37%, 57%, and 51% of these groups, respectively, with the prevalence of insomnia correlating with hot flash severity. (Arch Intern Med (June 26, 2006) 166:1262)[Abstract/Free Full Text]

Thirteen of 36 patients with type 2 diabetes had increased exophthalmos (by >2 mm) in a prospective study of pioglitazone effects on proptosis. These individuals had more prevalent thyroid disease, lower plasma adiponectin levels, and received higher doses of pioglitazone. (Clin Endocrinol (July 2006) 65(1):35)

Adding metformin to clomiphene had no incremental benefit inducing ovulation in women with polycystic ovary syndrome in a randomized prospective placebo controlled trial. (BMJ (June 24, 2006) 332(7556):1485)

Poor glycemic control was an independent predictor of survival in 114 diabetes patients with chronic renal disease on hemodialysis over a seven-year follow-up period. (Diabetes Care (July 2006) 29(7):1496)

In 498 obese adolescents, sibutramine therapy produced greater reductions in BMI (–2.9 kg/m2) and body weight (–8.4 kg, P < 0.001 for both) than hypocaloric dieting alone. Sibutramine-treated individuals also had greater improvements in triglyceride, HDL cholesterol, and insulin levels, as well as insulin sensitivity (P ≤ 0.001 for all). (Ann Int Med (July18, 2006) 145:81)[Abstract/Free Full Text]

In 102,400 predominantly white cancer-free women 24 to 44 years of age, risk of premature death over 12 years of follow-up was significantly higher for those with a BMI at age 18 of 25–29.9 kg/m2 (1.7 (CI, 1.3–2.1)) and even greater for a BMI >30 kg/m2 (2.8 [CI, 2.0 to 3.8]) compared with a BMI of 18.5 to 21.9 kg/m2. The excess death risk persisted in nonsmokers and was only partially attributable to adult BMI. (Ann Int Med (July18, 2006) 145:91)[Abstract/Free Full Text]

Acute prolactin release triggered by feeding. Quigley ME, Ropert JF, Yen SSC. J Clin Endocrinol Metab 1981;52:1043–1045.

"The present study demonstrates that food ingestion at lunch and supper triggers an acute release of prolactin by the hypothalamic-pituitary unit in fasting normal women. This synchronization between feeding and prolactin release, not previously observed, may have important implications in human prolactin physiology."
