Among half of 36,282 postmenopausal women who were randomized to supplementation with 1 gram calcium and 400 IU vitamin D per day or not, there was a modest increase in hip bone density, +1.1%; and among those adhering to therapy throughout the study, hip fracture risk was lower (0.71 (95% CI, 0.52 to 0.97)). However, there was no decreased risk of hip fracture in all women initially assigned to supplementation, and supplemented women had a higher risk of kidney stones. (N Engl J Med (Feb. 16, 2005) 354:669)

Women with low bone mineral density treated with denosumab, a monoclonal antibody inhibiting RANKL, had greater increases in lumbar spine, hip, and distal radius than those receiving alendronate or placebo. (N Engl J Med (Feb. 23, 2006) 354:821)[Abstract/Free Full Text]

In 145 older patients with type 2 diabetes, working memory was improved after addition of either rosiglitazone or glyburide. The degree of change correlated with improvement in fasting plasma glucose level. (Diabetes Care (Feb. 2006) 29:345)[Abstract/Free Full Text]

Among 3,233 Americans aged 65 years or older, the 1.5% with extant subclinical hyperthyroidism had a higher subsequent incidence of atrial fibrillation (RR 2.0, 95% CI 1.3–3.0); but neither they nor the 15% with subclinical hypothyroidism had higher incidences of coronary or cerebrovascular heart disease, or cardiovascular death. JAMA (March 1, 2006) 295:1033)[Abstract/Free Full Text]

Serum thyroxine-binding in pregnancy. Dowing TJ, Freinkel N, Ingbar SH. J Clin Endocrinol Metab 1956;16:280–281.

"At all concentrations of thyroxine, a marked difference in the distribution of radiothyroxine was noted between sera obtained from pregnant women and nonpregnant controls. In the pregnant group, the percentage of radioactivity associated with TBP (thyroid binding protein) was markedly increased."
