Longer duration of breast-feeding was associated with lower frequency of type 2 diabetes, especially within the first 15 years after childbirth, in two large cohorts of nurses followed for more than 10 years.
(JAMA (Nov. 23/30, 2005) 294:2601)[Abstract/Free Full Text]
Among 3,303 patients with diabetes, the patients with major and minor depression had 2.3- and 1.7-fold higher death rates, after adjustment for age, sex, race/ethnicity, and educational attainment
(Diabetes Care (Nov. 2005) 28:2668)[Abstract/Free Full Text]
Fenofibrate therapy for patients with type 2 diabetes in a randomized controlled trial with 9,795 patients was associated with lower incidences of nonfatal myocardial infarction and coronary revascularization than placebo, although fenofibrate did not improve overall mortality.
(Lancet (Nov. 26, 2005) 366:1849)[CrossRef][Medline]
Among 41 children and adolescents with early-onset type 1 diabetes who had suffered hypoglycemic seizures and/or coma, no evidence of greater impairment of mental ability or memory was found in comparison with 43 who had no history of severe hypoglycemia.

Deletion of the protein-threonine kinase LKB1 in mice activates AMPactivated protein kinase, causing hyperglycemia with increased gluconeogenesis, and negating the glucose lowering effect of metformin.

Endocrine Policy
|

The National Research Council released recommendations for U.S. patent policies affecting biomedical research, urging policymakers, courts, and health and patent officials to prevent the complex web of intellectual property protections from impeding advances in genomic and proteomic research. Milestones in Endocrinology
|
|---|
Fifty years ago, Adams, Purves and McKenzie discovered a long-acting thyroid stimulator (LATS) in the serum of thyrotoxic patients; and in the same year, Roitt and Doniach demonstrated thyroid autoantibodies in Hashimotos disease.

Therapeutic use of pituitary desensitization with a long acting LHRH agonist: A potential new treatment for idiopathic precocious puberty. Crowley WF, Comite F, Vale W, Rivier J, Loriaux DL, Cutler GB. J Clin Endocrinol Metab 1981;52:370372.
"A 2-year-old girl with idiopathic true precocious puberty was treated with a long acting LHRH agonist,D-Trp6-Pro9-Net-LHRH (LHRHa). After eight weeks of therapy (4 mcg/kg daily), mean gonadotropin levels fell to the pre-pubertal range.... no adverse drug reactions were encountered and all effects of therapy were reversed following cessation of treatment for two months. LHRH analogs may offer a new approach to the therapy of idiopathic precocious puberty and merit further study."
