In 1,255 hemodialysis patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, atorvastatin 20 mg per day over 4 years had no statistically significant effect on cardiovascular death, nonfatal myocardial infarction, or stroke despite lowering LDL cholesterol by 42%. (N Engl J Med (July 21, 2005) 353(3):238)

Nesidioblastosis was identified in six patients with postprandial hypoglycemia after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, perhaps caused by increased beta-cell trophic factors resulting from the surgery. (N Engl J Med (July 21, 2005) 353(3):249)

A three-allele risk haplotype of the ENPP1 Gene (6q16.3–q24.2) was linked with childhood and adult obesity (ORs = 1.69 and 1.37) and type 2 diabetes (OR = 1.56), making it a candidate for mediation of insulin resistance. (Nat Genet (Aug. 2005) 37(8):863)

The serum concentration of retinol binding protein-4 (RBP4) was found elevated in humans with obesity and type 2 diabetes, after its over-expression had been observed in insulin-resistant adipose-specific-Glut4 knockout mice. This finding and pharmacologic experiments suggest that RBP4 is an adipocyte-derived factor involved in development of type 2 diabetes. (Nature (July 21, 2005) 436:356)[CrossRef][Medline]

After administration of a single glyburide or glipizide dose to eight nursing women, drug was not detected in breast milk, and hypoglycemia was not observed in three nursing infants, implying that these agents may be safe in breast-feeding mothers. (Diabetes Care (Aug. 2005) 28:1851)[Abstract/Free Full Text]

The most recent NHANES survey of iodine nutrition confirmed stability and adequacy of U.S. dietary iodine intake, with a mean urinary iodine 168 mcg/L. (Thyroid (July 2005) 15(7):692)

Alendronate use for an additional year after a one-year course of PTH therapy maintained or augmented the previous PTH-related increase in bone mineral density in a group of postmenopausal women with osteoporosis, +12% versus +4% without subsequent bisphosphonate therapy. (NEJM (August 11, 2005) 353(6):555)

In women with previous alendronate-treated osteoporosis, addition of daily PTH therapy over 15 months–either continuously or with alternating 3-month cycles on and off PTH–led to a significantly higher spinal bone mineral density (+6.1% and +5.4%, respectively) than continued alendronate alone (P<0.001). (NEJM (August 11, 2005) 353(6):575)

Gonadotropins, Estrogens, and Adrenal Steroids during the Menopausal Hot Flash. Meldrum DR, Tataryn IV, Frumar AM, Erlik Y, Lu KH, Judd HL. J Clin Endocrinol Metab 1980;50:685–689. "By two different analyses, it was documented that pulsatile increases in LH were closely associated with finger temperature elevations, an objective marker of menopausal hot flashes...This finding is compatible with a hypothalamic mechanism for the initiation of this disturbance."
