Recommendations for a Revised Nomenclature of Thyroid Autoantigens and Autoantibodies

Recent developments in the field of thyroid autoimmunity, together with the complex terminology currently used to describe thyroid autoantigens and autoantibodies, suggest that it is now appropriate to revise the nomenclature. The nomenclature recommended is based on the use of abbreviations (in capital letters) for the thyroid autoantigen; in some cases this may be followed by one or more letters in parenthesis to indicate the nature of the assay system involved. When necessary, a prefix (in lower case letters) may be included to indicate the animal species from which the autoantigen was obtained. This type of nomenclature focuses attention on the autoantigen (which is often the major interest of the nonspecialist) while simultaneously providing thyroidologists with additional information when required. Further, the system is flexible as new procedures for measuring the same autoantibody, or epitopes on the autoantigen, can be included by the introduction of additional letters.
