Plasma Aldosterone Response to Low Dose ACTH Stimulation

M. G. NICHOLLS{dagger}, E. A. ESPINER and R. A. DONALD

The Medical Unit, The Princess Margaret Hospital Christchurch, New Zealand

Reprint requests should be sent to Dr. E. A. Espiner, Medical Unit, Princess Margaret Hospital, Christchurch, New Zealand.

The brief (60-min) infusion of a small amount (1.25 µg) of ACTH into 7 normal subjects on an unrestricted sodium intake resulted in a vigorous plasma aldosterone response in each case.

This finding suggests that physiologic fluctuations in ACTH may significantly alter aldosterone secretion in normal man.

{dagger} Present address: MRC Blood Pressure Unit, Western Infirmary, Glasgow, GII 6NT, United Kingdom.

Received February 19, 1975.
