The effect of intravenous synthetic luteinizing hormone releasinghormone (LH-RH) on plasma radioimmunoassayable levels of gonadotropinswas investigated in 6 women suffering from Cushing's diseasewith bilateral adrenal hyperplasia. In five of six cases nosignificant variation of plasma LH levels was found followingstimulation; in one case the response to LH-RH was present althoughslightly reduced below the normal range. By contrast in allcases the plasma FSH response was similar to that recorded innormal subjects. The explanation of impaired LH response isnot clear but the possibility that endogenous hypercortisolismaffects the pituitary responsiveness to LH-RH has to be considered.(J Clin Endocrinol Metab40: 892, 1975)
