Normal Rise in Plasma Free Fatty Acids During Fasting in Patients with Hypopituitarism

CLARK T. SAWIN and DAVID A. WILLARD

Endocrine Section, Medical Service, Boston Veterans Administration Hospital Boston, Massachusetts 02130
Department of Medicine, Tufts University School of Medicine Boston, Massachusetts

The level of plasma free fatty acids during a 42-hr fast was measured in 7 patients with hypopituitarism and in 6 normal subjects. All subjects were treated with replacement doses of thyroid, adrenocortical and gonadal hormones before study. Plasma free fatty acids increased during the fast in both groups and the rise did not appear deficient in subjects with hypopituitarism.

Supported by the Veterans Administration Medical Research and Educational Service. Washington, D.C.

Received April 8, 1970.
