A. PISAREV1,2, R. D. UTIGER3, J. P. SALVANESCHI4, N. ALTSCHULER2 and L. J. DEGROOT5Serum TSH was measured in goitrous and nongoitrous residents of an endemic zone in Neuquen, Argentina, and in normal subjects from a non-endemic zone, Buenos Aires. The subjects from Neuquen had higher values than those in Buenos Aires, but all were within the accepted normal range for the U.S.A. TSH elevation may be necessary for goiter formation but is not required for goiter maintenance.
