Department of Medicine, Postgraduate Medical School of London, Hammersmith Hospital London W 12, England Plasma cortisol levels were determined at intervals following the administration of cortisol. After oral administration, the mean cortisol concentration reached a peak at one hour which was significantly higher in females. After intravenous administration, mean values were also higher in females than males, but this difference was not significant. Possible explanations for these findings are discussed.
